Creating patchwork accents

Feb 25, 2011

I like to incorporate a patchwork look on many of my vintage inspired projects. This is a bit time consuming but an accent I feel is certainly worth the effort. All I do is cut patterned papers in different sizes then sew a straight stitch all around the inner edge of the patterned paper. Once I have all the stitching completed I take a pair of zigzag scissors and trim the outer edges on some of the patterned papers and leave some with a slight distressed straight edge.                   Above shows some of the straight edges distressed slightly and inked using a creamy brown ink. Below shows some of the edges trimmed using zigzag decorative...

Paper Mosaic

Feb 24, 2011

This mini album is featured in my book on page 48. They didn’t show the cover so I thought I would share it with you now since Spring is just around the corner. The step outs on page 49 show you how to recreate a paper mosaic that looks like broken pieces of china. This is certainly another project of mine that is filled with dimensional objects. I guess I visualize in 3‑D as nothing looks finished until items are popping off the project. I find how people create and visualize very interesting. My dad carves incredible objects out of wood. He can carve just about anything you request including wildlife and people as well as loads of other things. What I find fascinating is he cannot even begin to draw a 3 circled cat. My mom paints...

Fun notions project…

Feb 22, 2011

While I was on Pinterest looking at all the wonderful photos posted I came across this super cute project. I thought it was such an awesome idea and knew I had to make one. When my grandfather passed away mom and dad brought me back a cup and saucer they found in one of Grampa’s cabinets. The painted blueberries reminded mom of when we went blueberry picking one morning while we were visiting, this past summer. Well I decided I would use this cup and saucer to make my little notions holder and it was super easy. All you need to do is attach some small magnets to the bottom of the saucer using E6000 as directed on their package. Once the magnets were attached I attached the tea cup to the saucer using...

Pieces of Time

Feb 21, 2011

I am so looking forward to the Paper Cowgirl Retreat coming June 9th — 11th. Paper Cowgirl is a retreat held every June in Waxahachie, Texas. You will find classes such as altered art, painting, soldering and more. This retreat even has a vendor craft show that I hear is really nice and filled with lots of wonderful items for purchase. This year, I will be the guest speaker. I’m always excited to help those who wish to break into the world of publication. So my speech “Artist to Author” will hopefully encourage and inspire many to jump out of their comfort zone and give their dream of being published a go. I created an altered shadow box to teach exclusively at Paper Cowgirl. The altered project is titled “Pieces of Time” and each...

A new favorite…

Feb 19, 2011

I love jewelry, the handmade everyday kinda jewelry, not the fine stuff… that makes me too nervous to wear. The one big issue I have and is the reason I don’t wear a lot of necklaces and such is I am super picky about what I like… my style is one of a kind, sparkly and anything vintage. If I can get any one of these three things in a piece of jewelry well I’m excited and if I can get all three well I’m  SUPER over the moon excited! Well the other day I was reading Suze Weinberg’s facebook page and saw she opened up an etsy store called Suze does Fancy Schmancy. Well I hopped on over to take a look and BAM what did my eyes find… a one of a...

Birthday Box

Feb 18, 2011

This is a small gift box for a special birthday someone. I think my favorite part is the vial with the candle inside and the make a wish journaling strip wrapped around it. My husband Alan was looking at me a tad bit strangely as I was burning down the candle so it would fit inside. He is not a visual person so he could not figure out what in the world I was doing. But once he saw the finished project it all made sense to him and he loved it. I really like the tissue tape bow too… it is covered in crystal coarse glitter and outlined with Platinum Stickles. Anything birthday themed has to have glitter. Ha who am I kidding, it’s more like anything I create has to have glitter....

Altered Birdhouse…

Feb 17, 2011

This altered paper mache birdhouse was so much fun to make. Every little spot has something attached to it. You’ll notice all kinds of Tim’s new products attached here and there. I must admit one of the products he sent were his new light bulbs. At first I was kinda stumped on what to do with them but then I had a “light bulb moment” sorry couldn’t help myself and started tucking them in among all the other baubles and think they worked perfectly. The light bulbs are the perfect size for the miniature projects I like to create. And that fractured doll… oh how I could have a million of them and would still want more. I love those dolls so much. You will be seeing them in future projects and classes for...

Artful Couture Tag

Feb 16, 2011

Where do I even start… this 4.25″ x 8.5″ tag is FILLED with loads of inspiration! The dress form, button and spool are part of Tim’s new Sizzix Alterations ~Sewing Room Bigz Die. Those of you who know me know I am FAR from being a “couture” girl but for some reason seeing the dress form and other items made me think couture and I thought this theme would be a fun twist. And since Tim released the hanger clips it was only too perfect… “artful couture” was it’s destiny. I like how the book page flower boa adds just a tad bit more dimension to the tag… nothing cuter than flowers made of book pages. Then accenting the spool with one of his pearl baubles finished that simple cutie off perfectly. Adding glossy...

Altered Paper Mache Book

Feb 15, 2011

This altered piece uses all brand new CHA‑W release products by Tim Holtz. I was so happy to see the Fractured Doll in my box of products to design with.… I love these dolls and you get two different sized dolls per package! Next to the white seam binding I attached one of his new Chain Tassels. These are the perfect accent for a project and I love the movement of the tassel. The patterned papers used are from his new Paper Stash — Crowded Attic line. This paper line is so pretty and has designs in it for all styles. The butterflies and moths behind the Fractured Doll and among the paper flowers inside the book are from Tim’s new Salvage Stickers — Crowded Attic. I really like the butterflies and moths images....

Ranger Designer Challenge

Feb 14, 2011

I was thrilled when Ranger asked if I would be interested in creating a canvas for their Designer Challenge. I could not reply back fast enough with a very excited yes! They sent each designer a box filled with a 12 x 12 frame, Perfect Pearls and Perfect Pearl Mists and told us to create something that reflected our style. Well I knew mine had to include book pages, Platinum Stickles and glitter and once I got started I could not stop. I used loads of Ranger product and when you look at the list below you’ll realize I’m not kidding. It was so much fun to sit and just create whatever came to mind. I cut the grungepaper into squares, embossed them using my cuttlebug then sewed them all together with a zigzag...

Adirondack Acrylic Paint Dabbers

Feb 11, 2011

I bet you were expecting another tag using Perfect Pearls? Well this one features Ranger’s Adirondack Acrylic Paint Dabbers. When using paint I find it most inspiring to create whimsical pieces with brighter colors rather than my usual vintage style and shades. Kinda strange when I think about it. Also, did you notice I used my Canvas Album as inspiration for this tag? If you did, you are a very devoted blogger. I always find it fun to use items around my scraproom to create designs… one of the simplest things to create are polka dots with the non-bristle end of my paintbrushes. All you do is dip the end of the brush into the lid of the paintbrush and start creating dots. Clean up is super simple too. All you have to do...

Condolences and another tag…

Feb 10, 2011

First I must give my heart felt condolences to my Aunt and cousins. Yesterday, my Uncle David passed away peacefully at home. Uncle David was a quiet man yet when you talked with him he was so interesting as he could talk about all kinds of wonderful topics. Sadly, 10 years ago he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and not long after that Parkinson’s disease. Aunt Brenda cared for him at home every single day from the time of his diagnosis. Even though it is a blessing Uncle David has passed on it is still so sad and he will be missed. Aunt Brenda was a wonderful example of how family should care for family. We never heard her speak of any frustrations which I am certain there were many and we never ever heard...

Pink Carnations

Feb 9, 2011

This tag uses all four of the new Perfect Pearl colors from Ranger’s new Confections Set. I really like Pink Gumball as I think it is the perfect shade of pink for tinting flowers. And Wendy’s butterfly stamp is the perfect accent to go over sheet music. I love how you can make Perfect Pearls show in a subtle way by dry brushing them on (butterfly image) or mixing them with water or Perfect Pearl Mists on your non-stick craft sheet and applying them with a paint brush like watercolors (pink carnations). I had lots of fun with this tag. As you know or have figured out by now I love making paper flowers and when you add Perfect Pearls and Stickles to that list I am having loads of fun. Supplies Used: Perfect...

Who do you love?

Feb 8, 2011

As a child growing up I loved getting to visit my grandparents. Grammy Childers and Grammy Spinney always had one thing in common… flowers. I remember knowing I was at Grammy Spinney’s house as soon as I saw the pansies in her yard. And every summer Grammy Childers had the most gorgeous Hydrangea bush just below her kitchen window. The blooms were the size of dinner plates. Her garden always had flowers growing around it as well as along the sidewalk of her house. So each time I see flowers blooming I always think of them. So since flowers seem to remind me of those two special ladies I thought I would share this tag I created for Ranger. It was in there booth during CHA‑W. The flowers on this tag were created using...

Perfect Pearls Love Tag

Feb 7, 2011

I created this tag using the new Perfect Pearls Confections Kit just released at by Ranger CHA‑W. If you went to Ranger’s booth you might have seen it. This new combination is so pretty and reminds me of Spring. If you would like to recreate this tag just go here and you’ll find the entire supply list and step by step instructions. I used the Tim Holtz Alterations Tattered Florals Bigz Die to make the flower. I like the look of the pearls and vintage buttons strung on 24 gauge wire. I think I might be doing this more often. And yes you can see I used UTEE on the tag. It adds just the right amount of dimension and is so simple to do. I need jars and jars and jars of this...

Snow day..

Feb 4, 2011

It is nice to get a snow day instead of ice days. Frisco is on day 4 of no school due to ice and snow. I do believe we got more than the 1″ they were predicting and we should get another 1″ this morning. I must admit I do love looking at it and watching the snow flakes fall but I’m sure all the people trying to arrive today for Super Bowl weekend aren’t too happy. This much snow in our area really is not good. I heard Love Field Airport is closed at the moment… yikes. Not sure about DFW. The left of our neighborhood looking out the front door. The right of our neighborhood looking out the front door. What you see when you open the back door. And our backyard....

I’m home

Feb 3, 2011

It sure did feel great sleeping in my bed last night although I was hanging on for dear life because Chief was hogging my entire side of the bed. I must say the drive was a whole lot of scary getting home. I have never seen so much ice ever in Texas. Ansley has not had school since Monday and will not have school tomorrow either. Tonight and tomorrow morning we are supposed to get snow so no telling what tomorrow will bring in the weather department. Although they say it should get warmer Saturday so the ice should melt. We shall see. I certainly have enough work to keep me busy for the next month as my step-by-step photo shoot is next month. While at CHA I was happy to get a new...

CHA Day 3

Feb 1, 2011

What a great day today was. Thank you to all my sweet friends who came by the booth to wish me a happy birthday. It was so sweet of all of you. Those of you that decided to sing happy birthday to me I thank you too even though I wanted to run and hide. It was funny and I must admit so sweet. Carolyn and Keri made me a birthday card out of one of the catalogs they got at the show. I will have to take a photo of it tomorrow so you can see… it is too cute!  Caroline and David took all the Roadies out to eat and surprised me with a wonderful brownie and singing waiter after dinner. Yes I was beet red, wanting to hide but was touched...
