This background is super fun to create and surprisingly easy. All you need are 5 colored crayons, 1 white crayon, 1 mini 3″ x 3″ canvas, paper towels, natural bees wax, a non-stick craft mat, a spatula, an iron (Clover quilting iron) and a heat gun.

Place the tip of each crayon, one color at a time, onto the tip of the hot iron and melt onto the non-stick craft mat. To clean the tip of my iron after each crayon I rub it clean on top of several layers of paper towels. Make each melted blob different thicknesses. Once the melted crayons are cooled and the wax has hardened lift them from the non-stick craft mat using a small spatula.

Break the wax blobs into different shapes and sizes. Place each wax piece onto the canvas, one piece at a time then lightly melt the wax onto the canvas using a heat tool.

Continue to add wax layers making sure to have some areas higher than the other. Also, please note… when heating with the heat tool make sure you do not over heat the wax or the colors will begin to melt into each other creating a muddy look.

Once you have all the colors of wax attached to the mini canvas as you like melt the white crayon by holding it’s tip to the iron letting drops fall onto the canvas. Make sure you don’t add too much white or you will lose the vibrancy of the other colors. Please note… you can add drops of color here and there to fill in areas if needed by touching the ends of the crayons onto the iron and letting the melted wax drip onto the canvas.

Now here comes the really fun part. Pour enough natural bees wax pellets on top of the canvas to cover the upper half of the canvas. Now using your iron set on high melt the bees wax by touching the pellets and sweep the iron in a downward motion. Since the colored wax layers vary in height you will pick up wax colors here and there creating a beautiful mottled effect for a background.

Oh how I love this look. This background can be left as is or is now ready to be the base for a gorgeous encaustic art piece. Are you inspired? I hope so.

The last day of CHA-W, I showed lots of people how to create this super cute flower pin. You use about 12″ of Maya Road Satin Pleat Trim, 12″ of Maya Road Pleated Tulle and a Maya Road Antique Jewel Button for the center. To create the flower all you do is attach the pleated tulle on top of the satin pleat using Fabri-Tac adhesive at the sewn edge of each piece of trim. Then starting at one end loosely begin rolling the two trims until you get to the opposite end. Next, apply Fabri-Tac to a punched patterned paper circle and attach the bottom end (sewn edging) of the rolled trims to the punched circle, let the trims spread out a bit to resemble a rose. Then using a hot glue gun, attach an antique jewel button to the center of the flower as shown above. Using a hot glue gun attach a pin back to the back of the patterned paper circle.

Now for the fun part… post a comment to this blog post naming your favorite Maya Road Ribbons or Trims and I’ll give away one mini kit to one lucky winner to re-create this flower make n take.

And don’t forget to leave a comment on this previous POST ~ Celebrating 45 Years for a chance to win a pair of my favorite scissors, Fiskars Micro-Tip No. 5 Scissors. Two lucky winners will be picked from the comments left on the Celebrating 45 Years blog post. I love, love, love these scissors and was so fortunate to have Fiskars once again as a book sponsor for Delight In The Seasons.

Good luck … there will be three lucky winners announced, Friday… 1 for the Maya Road Make n Take and 2 for a pair of awesome Fiskars Micro-Tip Scissors.

When I was asked to create some projects using Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE) I had no idea I would fall in love with this medium like I did. This product is endless in possibilities. I made rings and charms, altered a gift box, created a mini canvas, made faux lollipops, inspiration baubles and discovered a faux sea glass technique. This product is FUN!

UTEE Rings

I pressed a Tim Holtz button into Mold-n-Pour to create the flower mold and a vintage earring to create the blue polka dotted one. Once the mold was ready I removed the button and earring and filled them with UTEE.

Altered Gift Box using UTEE

The flower center is the same vintage earring mold I used to make the polka dot ring. The box lid is covered with UTEE and while still warm I pressed Wendy Vecchi’s script stamp over the stamped image then rubbed in a little Diamond Stickles in the recessed words. The flower is one of Wendy’s stamps too. After stamping and inking the flower onto cardstock I cute it out and then covered it with UTEE.

Mini Canvas

I love the different textures I created with the UTEE on this mini canvas. The flowers have the recessed script on the petals like the lid on the box above, the heart and base are lumpy and bumpy and the letters and butterfly are smooth. All you need to do to get the different textures is heat the UTEE to the full melting point which will give you a smooth texture or heat the UTEE just to when it starts to melt and stop to get the lumpy bumpy texture. The secret is all in the amount of heating you do.

Lollipops and Inspirational Baubles

These were made using molds from the candy making section in major craft stores. The silicone molds you find in this section make for perfect molds as well as in the $1 section at Target. You can find some really cute seasonal molds in Target. I accented the tops of the lollipops and baubles using glossy accents, micro beads, pearls, rhinestones and gems.

Faux Sea Glass

I created this embellishment using another one of Wendy Vecchi’s flower stamps, Mold-n-Pour and UTEE. Super fun, super easy.

I hope some of these projects inspire you to give UTEE a try. It’s loads of fun… promise.

Hugs!

One thing I love to do is look in the $1 section at Target, in Thrift Stores or in the clearance aisle for silicone baking molds. I like to use them to create holiday and seasonal Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE) embellishments and small projects. Well, the other day I scored big time in the $1 section at Target. They had these super cute cupcake (Christmas Tree, Snowflake and Gingerbread Man) silicone molds. I grabbed them like they were gold and could not wait to get home and start playing.

To make these soon to be ornaments all you need to do is melt clear UTEE as instructed on the UTEE Melting Pot. Make sure you have the Melting Pot on a Non-Stick Craft Sheet and remember UTEE and the Melting Pot are HOT HOT HOT. As the UTEE melts it will turn a gorgeous amber hue which is perfect for a vintage girl like myself. Once the UTEE has completely melted carefully pour the UTEE into the silicone mold to about the 1/4 way mark on the silicone mold. If you want yours thicker pour in more UTEE if you want it thinner pour in less. This is really a personal preference. Just remember, the thicker it is the longer it takes to harden. Let the UTEE in the mold cool completely then just pop the hardened UTEE piece out.

Once the UTEE pieces were cooled I placed vintage book pages or sheet music on the back of each one. First, I traced the item onto the vintage paper with a pencil, cut out the traced shape, applied Glossy Accents to the back of the UTEE piece then attached the vintage paper over the Glossy Accents and smoothed the back to make sure all the air bubbles were removed. After the Glossy Accents dried I then accented the Snowflake using Diamond Stickles and the Gingerbread Man using Jenni Bowlin’s Acrylic Paint Dabbers in Malted Milk, Chili Powder and Seed Packet. I then accented over the painted areas using Diamond Stickles.

So make sure when you’re out and about you’re on the look out for cute cupcake and ice cube silicone molds because they are perfect for UTEE. These can be turned into holiday magnets, ornaments, used as place cards for your holiday table setting, placed among garland or hung on the tree. The possibilities are endless. Just have fun!

Warmest Hugs!

Caroline Lau liked this post

I’ve been having fun creating these miniature charms in between working on CHA projects and other design commitments. Yes, it’s that time of year again… CHA-W is just a little over a month away. I will be working in the Maya Road booth again with some wonderful make n takes lined up and have two book signings for my new book “Delight In The Seasons”.… I cannot wait for this book to debut. I’m so proud of it!

Ok on to the charms… the base measure 3/4 inches square and are actually vintage bingo pieces. I attached heavy white cardstock on the top of each bingo piece then using Coffee Archival Ink and several different Antiquated Collection stamps I stamped parts of the images from the Perfumery (crown), Pocket Watch and Robe Pattern (Fine and Dandy), Angel’s Face (Dr. Warner’s Corsets) and Brooch Scroll (Society Lady). Next, I used Copic Markers and Diamond Stickles to accent the Crown, Pocket Watch and Angel charms. I then applied glossy accents on top of the Angel and Pocket Watch and Sepia Glossy Accents on top of the Brooch Scroll, Robe Pattern and Crown charms. Each one was then set aside to dry thoroughly overnight. Now, all I need to do is place a piece of vintage ledge paper or sheet music on the back and attach a bail using a strong liquid adhesive.

I also have a Year-End Workshop Clearance going on… I created two workshop bundles I think you wont want to miss out on. The first bundle of online workshops is the Home and Family Package. It costs only $19.95 for 5 online workshops. This makes them only $3.99 per workshop and gives you a total savings of $89.80. The second bundle of online workshops is the Holiday Project Package. It costs only $16.95 for 4 online workshops. This makes these only $4.24 per workshop and gives you a total savings of $42.85. Each online workshop is includes color photos, step by step instructions and a complete supply list.

Each time I use a domino it brings me back to how I acquired them… One day as I was taking Ansley someplace after school when she was around 13 or 14 years old, as we were about to leave the neighborhood I noticed dominoes scattered all over the street. Well, I’m sure you can see where this is going… I immediately stopped the car (thankfully, we live in a quiet neighborhood) and had her jump out to pick up as many as she could out of the road. I just could not stand the thought of these getting ruined by cars driving over them again and again. Well, Ansley was able to pick up all of them and not one car passed down the street. She on the other hand was horrified that I would have her do such a thing because you know… it had nothing to do with her safety it was that one of her friends could have seen her. Anyway, just a funny memory I reflect on each time I use one.

To create your piece of Domino Art, first stamp the lady from my Antiquated Collection ~ Society Lady Stamp Set using Jet Black Archival Ink, then carefully fill in the stamped areas using Alcohol Inks of your choice. I used one of the Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink Refillable Pens I filled with Blending Solution and carefully colored in the blank areas of the stamped image.

I gently dabbed the alcohol inks on as too much pressure would make the black stamped image disappear. Most likely should have used Memento Ink since I was using an alcohol based ink to color it in. But I did get this too work beautifully with a gentle touch. So key words today are… very gentle touch or change the ink to Memento.

I have a few drops of my favorite Alcohol Inks dried in a plastic paint palette so all I need to do is dab a bit of the ink onto the pens nib and paint away. I saw this cool trick from this Ranger video. Once I was finished coloring in the stamped areas I accented parts of the image using Diamond Stickles, then set it aside to dry.

It’s nice to see you all “Liking” the Antiquated Collection by Lisa M. This makes it easy to stay up to date on all the happenings of my new stamp line, get inspired with inspiration from the Design Team and see what others are creating with their Antiquated Collection stamp sets. Each month, I’ll always have some sort of giveaway or RAK so come help get this snowball of fun rolling.

Many of you asked if I planned to offer the “Christmas Wishes” and “Vintage Ornament Trio” classes I taught at The Crafty Scrapper as an online workshop. Well the answer is yes, but I did something a bit different this year. Instead of an online workshop where I post something each day like I usually do I (well let me clarify, Alan) created PDF’s for you to download. I took additional photos and added additional instructions to the PDF’s so it will make it easier to recreate the projects, since I’m not actually standing in front of you giving you all the instructions.

Click the badge on the left to go to “Ornamental Christmas” on my “Workshops” page. The PDF downloads include step by step instructions, color photos, complete supply lists for both incorporated classes, vintage images and text you will need for the projects. The cost for Ornamental Christmas is only $14.95. Please note that after your payment is received you will have 5 days to download the 5 PDFs.

If you have ANY techy questions please feel free to email me and I will redirect them to Alan. Not gonna even lie I have NO clue when it comes to techy computer stuff.

I have just 4 Vintage Christmas Kits remaining. Each kit includes items used in the two classes. But please note it does not include everything. I filled each kit with all the extras figuring some of you would like the vintage items.

I added brown and white baker’s twine to the top of the smaller pumpkins and accented the edges of the JBS Alterable Letters — Micro Dots using Chicken Feed and brown ink. And of course I accented the top of each letter using Diamond Stickles. The 2011 are JBS Vintage Black Stickers.

Please forgive me for the last few days. I have been working on some projects that I cannot wait to share. I will be doing an online chat with A Cherry On Top, November 19th (once we have the time set I will let you know) during this chat I will finally get to reveal my secret… needless to say, I am counting down the days. So, if you want to know make sure you are all signed up at ATOC to participate in the chat.

Okay, so now to altering the chipboard pumpkins with Jenni Bowlin’s awesome Halloween 2011 line.

To create the pumpkin template place a piece of computer paper on top and trace over the recessed area with a stylus and cut out. For the stem portion of the pumpkin I traced the outer stem area onto the paper with a pencil and used the stylus to get the bottom portion of the stem and cut it out.

Apply adhesive over the entire front of the pumpkin, attach patterned paper, using a craft knife cut around the edges then sand and ink the edges using a brown ink.

Now trace the stem template onto patterned paper and cut out. Ink the edges using a brown ink, apply adhesive to the back of the stem and attach to the top of the pumpkin. Sand the edges and ink again if needed.

Note: You will want to do the same thing to the back of the stem and any part of the pumpkin that will show when the page is turned.

Trace the pumpkin template onto patterned paper. I traced it twice onto two different patterned papers then cut the oval center portion of the template out and traced different patterned paper for the center section of the pumpkin. Distress the edges and ink using a brown ink. Apply adhesive to the patterned papers and attach to the pumpkin as shown.

Accent the patterns on the patterned paper using Diamond Stickles. I accented the stars and orange polka dots. Let dry.

Here is a brooch I created using a vintage doily and some Maya Road Velvet Pleat Blossoms. It looks so cute on my sweater which I plan to wear during ScrapFest… come on cool weather. I’m so looking forward to teaching classes for Maya Road, helping them with make-n-takes and a book signing each day. It’s going to be so fun surrounded by crafty, creative people.

If you want to make this brooch all you need is one small vintage doily, 7 Maya Road Velvet Pleat Blossoms, Fabri-Tac and a pin back. Then just start attaching the Blossoms using the Fabri-Tac. Once the adhesive is dry attach a pin back to the back of the doily and that’s it… instant brooch.

Yesterday and today I have been out junking and antiquing and the finds I got are amazing. I cannot wait to start working on some Christmas classes to teach at The Crafty Scrapper. They are going to be adorable.
