CHA-S 2013 ~ Bird Cage Card

Aug 29, 2013

Here is another card I created for Ranger using a few of the new Stickles released at CHA-S. It looks like this week on my blog it’s all about birds. I certainly didn’t intend it to be but it sure did happen. This all occasion card is created using the Tim Holtz Sizzix ~ Caged Bird die. I accented the cage and birds edges using Mercury Glass Stickles. The Petaloo Color Me flowers are painted with Perfect Pearls Powders ~ Confections Kit then the edge of each petal is accented with Ice Blue and Pink Taffeta Stickles. I really wish you could see how pretty these flowers look in person. The shimmer from the Perfect Pearls and the sparkle from the Stickles really makes the flowers shine. To finish the card I placed several vintage leaves under the flowers,...

Outside My Window…

Aug 28, 2013

It always amazes me at all the wildlife we have around our house. Mind you we sit in the middle of the burbs. But at any given moment I can see Canadian Geese strutting down our neighborhood street looking as though they are protesting against all the mallards taking over the waterway. Or are getting ready for a West Side meets Easy Side scuffle. All day long I have birds visiting this birdbath I made from a large piece of terra cotta. Throughout the day birds come for a little drink on hot summer afternoons or take a quick bath to cool themselves off. And not a day goes by that I don’t have a mockingbird and bluejay spatting with one another outside. I tell ya, it’s a busy little spot outside my...

Birdcage Home Decor Accent

Aug 27, 2013

This primitive style birdcage was created with wire and you guessed it…. plaster. I truly love the creative freedom plaster gives me. I discovered when creating with plaster, perfection is acquired with it’s imperfect result. This is a freedom I’m shocked I’ve come to embrace as you know with my paper art I’m not this way at all. Everything has to be precise. I find it really interesting how I embrace these two mediums so differently. I’m going to continue adding vintage bits and baubles to the birdcage as I find them as well as a few inspiring words on the bird’s tail feathers. I envision the base of the bird cage having a poem or some kind of wording wrap around it but I’ve not found the perfect saying quite yet. So this...

Miniature Art ~ Affections

Aug 22, 2013

Today, I’m sharing a fun little (and I mean little as in 2″ x 2″  little) miniature canvas. I wanted the texture of this canvas to have that old stucco look and feel I came to love seeing on so many buildings while in Bellago, Italy. To start I covered the entire canvas with plaster, once dry I applied a thin coat of a cream colored acrylic paint over the entire canvas. Since I wanted the plaster to resemble old stucco I applied a color wash over the dried cream paint using a watered down brown acrylic paint. While the wash was still wet I used a dry paper towel to wipe off the excess color wash. This technique worked beautifully and the plaster finish looks just like the buildings I remember seeing in...

Allie Creates

Aug 21, 2013

Look at all the awesome projects Kids Crafts Art Box Winner ~Allie has created with her grandmother Sue Adams. Sue nominated Allie for a chance to win the Kids Crafts Art Box I gave away several weeks ago and it’s awesome seeing all the fun things they’ve made together from the items in the Art Box. They altered an apron, made a bead buddy, created a set of adorable altered jean pockets, a set of altered clothes pins and pencils and even had time for a manicure using some pink glittered flocking. Talk about some serious crafting. Those two have been busy! I love seeing Allie’s projects so much that I’m going to do another Kids Crafts Art Box giveaway, in the near future. It’s just a little way I can pay it forward...

CHA-S 2013 ~ Dress Form Card

Aug 20, 2013

This is a card I created for Ranger using the new Stickles they debuted at CHA-S. Oh my goodness are you going to LOVE the new colors. They are awesome and I have a few new favorites to add to my collection/addiction, Mercury Glass, Champagne and Pink Taffeta are my favorites from CHA-S.   In this close up you can really see how pretty the Pink Taffeta Stickles looks accenting the design on the wings. It is the most beautiful shade of vintage pink. The dress form and bow are accented using Champagne Stickles. This new color looks just like antiqued gold. It’s gorgeous. Tip: To make the Stickles pop even more on the edge of the dress I first inked the edges using Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Then I applied the Stickles.  I used...

Plaster Posy

Aug 19, 2013

Before falling asleep one evening, I was thinking about things to create with plaster and thought a flower would be fun. So the next morning, I grabbed some wire and started bending and twisting it into shape creating the base for a neat plaster posy. Once I had everything the way I liked it I applied plaster and got really messy. I love the rawness of plaster and find it so inspiring. After the plaster was completely dry I used bees wax to seal images onto the posy. Then to accent the edges of each petal and the leaf I painted metallic gold paint all along the edges. I love how this little unassuming pop of gold looks. Painting the edges of any project really does help finish off your piece. To complete the...

Just carving, he said…

Aug 15, 2013

Several weeks ago while working in my studio, my nephew Brittain, who is now living with us while  attending college came in to chat. Well all of a sudden he started working away on something that involved a knife from my work table and a chopstick. While we were chatting he was intensely busy cutting small pieces from the chopstick and using some Tim Holtz Distress Markers. I asked him what he was doing and he said, just carving. Oh if you are wondering why I keep chopsticks on my work table… well, I keep one on hand when soldering. FYI… Using chopsticks to steady pieces when soldering is an awesome tip my soldering instructor Trisha Conlon-Perkins shared during a class. She has saved my fingertips on more than one occasion with this wonderful tip. After a...

Home for Christmas

Aug 14, 2013

This is the second of three classes I will be teaching at Creative Cards and Crafts in Villa Park, IL ~ Oct.18th & 19th. In this Home for Christmas class I will show you how to create three old fashioned Putz style houses using patterned papers from the new Graphic45 12 Days of Christmas line. Once all three houses are built and accented with Stickles and glitter you will group them on a decorative acrylic platter covered with faux snow and sisal trees to complete a miniature winter themed neighborhood. As a bonus I will show you how easy it is to bleach sisal trees at home if you wish for yours to be off white in color. And a vintage Christmas project would not be complete without including a few vintage mercury glass...

I’ll be teaching three classes at Creative Cards and Crafts in Villa Park, IL ~ Oct. 18th & 19th. This project is just one of the three classes I’ll be teaching. In my “Quilted Memories” class you will paint and alter a 5” x 5” wooden shadow box using a beautiful butter cream colored acrylic paint and vintage sheet music. You will accent the back of the shadow box using stamps from my Antiquated Collection Line which I’ll be sharing so you can personalize the back as you wish. Inside each 1.5” square you will attach fabric pieces from a tattered and torn quilt lovingly sewn by my great great aunts. You will accent each fabric piece with items like vintage shell buttons, crocheted doilies handmade by my mom, a vintage glass vial filled with silver...
